AIA Menopause Support Brochure

HOW LEADERS AND COLLEAGUES CAN SUPPORT Menopause can impact work in different ways—physically, mentally, and emotionally. As a leader or colleague, you play a key role in creating a supportive environment where people feel safe, understood, and empowered to thrive.

Why It Matters

• Menopause is a natural life stage, not a performance issue.

• Supportive workplaces reduce stress, absenteeism, and stigma.

• Small actions can make a big difference to someone’s wellbeing and confidence.

One of my colleagues has opened up to me what should I say? Don’t feel like you have to have the perfect thing to say. Simply offering your support and understanding can be one of the most helpful things you can do. A conversation might look like this: • Start simple - “Are you OK?”, “Thanks for sharing that with me”, “How could I support you?”

• Listen actively - Give them time to respond. You’re not there to fix anything, diagnose or judge.

• Avoid assumptions - Everyone’s experience is different - don’t generalise.

• Encourage them to speak with their leader - Their leader can provide more support and explore what changes might help them manage symptoms at work. • Direct them to further resources - Suggest they access wellbeing resources such as EAP’s Menopause specialists and connect in with the People & Culture team if needed. How can leaders and teams contribute to an inclusive work environment? • Increase Your Understanding of Menopause - the more you know, the better you can support others. Understanding the practical adjustments and support measures available (pg. 5 & 6) will help you provide support. For example use the 25/55 minute meeting guideline, and encouraging the use of quiet zones or focus rooms. • Building Relationships Based on Trust, Empathy and Respect will make it easier for a colleague to feel comfortable to talk about their wellbeing. Regular check-ins help create an open and inclusive culture. • Share Your Experience - if you’re going through menopause — or have in the past — sharing your story can be a powerful way to break down stigma and build understanding. • Remind your team about EAP services, Wellness Rooms, and Pause Pals (our AIA team members who are available for a chat/kōrero about menopause). • Respect Cultural and Individual Needs - some people may seek support through Rongoā Māori, Traditional Chinese Medicine, or spiritual practices.
