TRAUMA INSURANCE
Our AIA Living Trauma insurance options AIA offers one of the most comprehensive trauma insurance ranges in New Zealand, giving you the choice of your level of cover to suit your budget. By combining our trauma products, you can create a personalised protection plan that meets your needs. Whether you’re looking for comprehensive cover, or a cost-effective solution for serious illnesses, our options work together to provide layered protection, so you’re supported for a wide range of conditions. Critical Conditions This is our most comprehensive trauma insurance, providing financial support through full or partial lump sum payments for a wide range of defined medical conditions, so you can focus on recovery, not expenses. Plus, with the option to buy back your cover after a claim, you can maintain long- term protection and peace of mind. Progressive Care Affordable trauma cover that can provide multiple payments for defined medical conditions based on how serious your condition is; more serious illnesses receive greater financial support. This ensures you’re covered across five key health categories, and even if you’ve received a full payment in one area, you may still be eligible to claim in others. Severe Trauma Our most cost-effective trauma cover, designed to support you through life-changing medical events. It focuses on fewer, more severe conditions that have a very significant impact on your day-to-day life.
What is trauma insurance and why do you need it?
Trauma insurance helps keep you on track so you can live life to the full, no matter what life throws at you. It is designed to pay you a lump sum to manage the financial impact if you or one of your children were to face serious illness or injury, like taking care of medical treatment and rehabilitation costs, or simply allowing you and your family to focus on recovery instead of worrying about work. Unfortunately, experiencing a trauma such as serious illness or injury at least once in your life is more common than you might think. New Zealanders are increasingly surviving illnesses that previously have been terminal. Key benefits of our trauma insurance • Gives you tailored financial protection for a range of medical conditions, with different cover options based on severity, so you can choose what best fits your needs and circumstances. • Support for your whole family with cover for children aged 3 months to 21 years, helping ease the financial burden if your child faces a serious illness or injury. • Receive a lump sum to use where it’s needed most, whether it’s covering your mortgage, funding treatment and rehab, managing everyday expenses or bridging lost income. • Whether you are at home, travelling or living overseas for any period, you remain insured with worldwide cover.
AIA Vitality is our personalised, science-backed health and wellbeing programme that supports you every day to make healthier lifestyle choices. It takes you on a journey to better health - where you get to know your health, improve it, and enjoy the rewards for doing so. Add AIA Vitality when you purchase trauma insurance to receive: • an initial 10% premium discount* on your first year’s premium • earn up to $560 in vouchers or Airpoints Dollars TM per membership year • exclusive rewards and discounts from our partners.

How Critical Conditions and Severe Trauma insurance can work together
Mary’s claim journey
Understand your cover It’s important to understand that while a medical condition might be covered under multiple products, the definition, severity level and claim requirements can differ between them. Always refer to the specific policy wording to ensure clarity on what’s covered and how.
Mary holds both Critical Conditions and Severe Trauma insurance. She is diagnosed with breast cancer. Her claim is accepted and she receives a partial claim payment under the Carcinoma-in-situ benefit on her Critical Conditions policy. Weeks later and following her specialist’s advice, Mary underwent a full mastectomy. This qualified her for an additional payment under Critical Conditions under the Carcinoma-in-situ radical surgery benefit, bringing her total payout to the full sum assured. Later, her cancer progresses and metastasizes. When no further treatment is an option, Mary received a further full claim payment under the cancer definition under the Severe Trauma benefit, providing her with financial support during an extremely difficult time.
Progressive Care Progressive Care cover can help provide multiple payments linked to the severity of the illness or injury, with more severe conditions receiving a larger payment. Progressive Care is designed to support you when you need it most, not just once.

How multiple conditions are covered under Progressive Care When your policy begins, the amount of cover in each of the five categories is the same. As you claim for a condition, the amount reduces only for that category. The strength of Progressive Care means after you make an initial claim (First Claim), you could then make future claims if your condition becomes worse or you suffer from a more severe related condition (Related Claim), or if you suffer from an unrelated condition (Unrelated Claim). First claim If a claim is paid under a specific category, the insurance remaining within that category decreases by the claim payment amount. If you receive a 100% claim payment, the insurance for that particular category is exhausted. However, the amount of cover for all other categories remains unaffected.
For example, if you are diagnosed with malignant melanoma that meets the criteria for Severity Level 4, you’ll receive a payment of 25% under the Cancer Category and the sum assured for that category will reduce by the amount paid. The sum assured for other categories continues at 100%.

Related claims If your medical condition worsens or you suffer from a related medical condition, you could claim again. The severity level must be higher than the preceding related claim. In these cases, the claim payment is based on increase in the severity*.
For example, if your condition worsens and the melanoma progresses to metastatic skin cancer that meets the criteria for Severity Level 1, it will be treated as a related claim and you’ll receive a 75% claim payment being the balance remaining under the Cancer Category. *Subject to cover being available within the category.
